Have You Ever Tried to Redecorate a Room in Your House and Failed to Achieve Your Desired Look? Here’s What You Probably Got Wrong..

Redecorating a room can be a thrilling yet daunting task. If you’ve ever found yourself frustrated with your redecorating results, you’re not alone. Here are some common pitfalls and how to avoid them:

1. Lack of a Clear Vision

Many homeowners start redecorating without a concrete plan (especially you impulsive ADHDers – I’m talking to you!) Making a decision to decorate a room and going out to buy paint samples straight away is a categorical FAIL. Not having a plan can lead to a disjointed look that lacks cohesion. Start by defining the purpose of the room and the mood you want to create. Use mood boards or Pinterest to gather inspiration and ensure every piece aligns with your overall vision.

2. Ignoring the Fundamentals of Space Planning

Space planning is crucial. You might have found beautiful pieces of furniture, but if they don’t fit the space properly, the room will feel cramped or awkward. Measure your space and create a floor plan to see how furniture will fit. Consider traffic flow and ensure there’s enough room to move around comfortably and accommodate everyone (not forgetting pets, or children).

3. Prep, Prep, PREP!!

It’s absolutely useless forking out for Farrow & Ball if you’re not going to take the time to properly prep your walls and surfaces. Remove any paper, fill in any holes or cracks, lightly sand the walls all over (yes, all over!), then clean off properly and sugar soap everywhere. Add a mist coat of 50/50 paint to water before painting with emulsion. If you’re painting over new plaster then it’s crucial you PVA the walls first, or the new plaster will absorb your new lovely paint or wallpaper/tile adhesive, leaving you with a patchy mess. Yes it’s a total faff, but it’s worth it in the end.

4. Overlooking the Power of Lighting

Lighting can make or break a room’s ambiance. Poor lighting choices can make a room feel uninviting. Mix different types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Use dimmers to adjust the lighting according to the time of day and activity. Don’t be afraid to go BOLD with a quirky statement lamp, it can be just as impactful as a piece of art or sculpture.

5. Choosing Style Over Comfort

While aesthetics are important, comfort should never be compromised. Choose furniture that is both stylish and functional. Remember, you’ll spend a lot of time using these pieces, so they need to be comfortable. If you’re ordering furniture online to save money, read all the reviews first rather than just looking at the pretty pictures.

6. Shoddy Color Schemes

Consider your flooring first, then your furniture and fabrics, then your paint/wall colours LAST. A poorly chosen colour palette can disrupt the harmony of a space. Select a colour scheme that complements the room’s purpose and mood. If you’re the person who chooses a paint colour first, then fills the room with furnishings and wonders why it just doesn’t quite work – listen to your Aunty Jen, paint colour comes LAST. (Trust me).

7. Neglecting Texture and Pattern

Texture and pattern add depth and interest to a room. Don’t shy away from mixing different materials and patterns. Balance is key; if you have a bold pattern, pair it with more subdued textures to avoid overwhelming the space. Add velvet to linens, chuck a bit of wool and silk in there and layer your textiles. Even if you’re not a fan of bold prints, different weaves such as herringbone or check will do the job just fine.

8. Forgetting About Personalisation

Your home should reflect who you are. Incorporate personal touches like family photos, travel souvenirs, or art. These elements make your space unique and tell your story. Don’t decorate your home for other people by keeping it neutral – it’s your space, so reflect your tastes (no matter how bonkers!).

9. Poor Budget Allocation

Many people spend too much on items that don’t have a significant impact and skimp on things that could make a big difference. Think ‘touch points’. For example, invest in high-quality hardware and lighting, which are used frequently and can elevate the overall look. Save on decor items that can be easily swapped out or sourced from little antiques markets and charity shops.

10. Failing to Plan for the Future

Trends come and go, but your home should stand the test of time. Choose classic, timeless pieces that can adapt to changing styles. This approach not only saves money in the long run but also keeps your space feeling fresh and relevant.

So there you have it, follow these tips next time you’re planning to transform a room (hopefully not on a weekend whim…!) and remember, good design is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that enhance your life and well-being.
